What SFI is

Swedish for immigrants, SFI, is basic Swedish-language education within municipal adult education. Eligibility depends on residence and your need for basic Swedish; your municipality assesses your situation. Tuition is free.

Courses A–D and study paths

SFI has courses A, B, C and D across three study paths. Your previous schooling and learning needs affect the starting point and pace. Everyone does not begin at A. A course label is not a universal CEFR certificate, and course D should not simply be relabelled B1.

Enrol through your municipality

  1. Find your municipality’s SFI or adult-education admissions service.
  2. Ask which identity and residence documents to provide, and arrange the assessment of your Swedish and educational background.
  3. Discuss a schedule that fits your circumstances. Evening, distance and classroom options vary locally; do not assume they are all available. Ask about support needs at the same time.

SFI and citizenship evidence

A passing grade in course D can show Swedish knowledge under Migrationsverket’s current list. It is not civics evidence or approval of an application. Keep your transcript and read the separate language-requirements guide.
