Permanent residence: find the route that applies to you

A permit, a residence card and citizenship are different things. Start with your permit category, then check its current requirements.

This organises your preparation. It does not assess eligibility or calculate an application date.

Start with your permit decision

There is no single permanent-residence clock for everyone. Read the legal ground and expiry date on your decision. Employees, researchers, family members and people with protection-related permits follow different rules. A date entered in a calculator cannot establish eligibility.

The employee route

Migrationsverket’s employee extension page requires work and a qualifying work permit for four of the previous seven years, with the permit conditions met. It describes applying for permanent residence with an extension. Do not substitute an unverified “44 of 48 months” formula or assume an unrelated research-rule change lets every worker apply mid-permit.

Time is only one part. The authority also checks self-support and your expected way of life. Read the worker-specific guide and keep permit decisions, contracts, payslips and insurance records.

Protection-related permits and citizenship

The 2026 changes remove permanent residence for specified protection-related groups and associated family routes. Existing permanent permits are not removed by that change. Do not infer that every temporary permit lasts five years.

Since 12 July 2026, specified permit holders can meet an exception to the citizenship requirement for permanent residence. The ten-year rule removes the “well-founded prospects” condition within those specified groups; it is not a universal waiver of the permit requirement. A valid qualifying permit is still needed.

The card is not the permit

If you already have permanent residence and your card expires, book a photograph and fingerprints through Min sida. Booking opens at the earliest three months before the card expires. This is replacement of the proof of your permit, not a new permanent-residence application.
