The employee route in October 2026

For employees, Migrationsverket specifies qualifying work and permits for four of the previous seven years, with permit conditions met. Its employee page describes applying for permanent residence with an extension. Check the exact route; a 44-of-48-month shortcut does not establish eligibility.

Time is only one part. The authority also checks self-support and your expected way of life. Read the worker-specific guide and keep permit decisions, contracts, payslips and insurance records.

Keep one file for the whole permit period

Keep every permit decision, contract, payslip, tax statement and insurance record. Record changes of employer, occupation and gaps in work. Four calendar years since arrival do not by themselves prove four qualifying years.

Planning with documents from China

If your earlier documents are from China, build one timeline from the dates on your Swedish permit decisions, arrival and trips abroad. Use the same spelling of your identity across documents and ask which originals or translations the authority needs. A Chinese passport does not create a separate eight-year calculation. Before naturalising, read the dual-citizenship guide and check the consequences under the other country’s law.

PUT and citizenship use different clocks

Example: a worker’s years before permanent residence may count towards citizenship if they meet the habitual-residence rules. Getting PUT does not automatically restart the clock. Equally, four years with a work permit plus four with PUT is not a guaranteed citizenship date: absences, status and the other conditions still matter.

Application fees, test fees and waiting times are separate questions. Use the fee guide, the waiting-time guide and the language evidence guide. No example here predicts when your case will be approved.

Questions, answered

Does four years mean automatic permanent residence?

There is no single permanent-residence clock for everyone. Read the legal ground and expiry date on your decision. Employees, researchers, family members and people with protection-related permits follow different rules. A date entered in a calculator cannot establish eligibility.
