What this chapter covers

Explore celebrations through the year and the meanings people give them. Some traditions have religious roots, others relate to seasons, political movements or national history. The same celebration can mean different things to different families.

Connect each occasion with a custom and its background. Keep a celebration separate from a statutory public holiday, and remember that traditions change: knowing a custom does not mean everyone follows it.
