What this chapter covers

Media inform, scrutinise and create space for debate. This chapter explains the freedoms and responsibilities behind that work, including access to official documents, protection of sources and public service media.

Practise separating a reported fact from an opinion or an advertisement. Before sharing a claim, consider its source, purpose and supporting evidence. Popularity alone does not establish that something is true.

    The information is protected by statutory secrecy. Secrecy must have a legal basis and can protect personal circumstances, for example. Information being embarrassing to an authority is not itself grounds for withholding it.
