Renewing your PUT card: step by step

The card and the permit

A permanent residence card has an expiry date even though the underlying permit has no fixed end date. Renewing the card is not a new application for permanent residence. A permit can still be revoked under the applicable rules.

Book and prepare

Use Min sida to book photographs and fingerprints. You can book a time no earlier than three months before the card expires. Check the date yourself and follow the instructions in your message; do not rely only on a reminder.

Bring a valid identity document and your existing card. Check Migrationsverket’s current delivery instructions before making travel plans; a delivery estimate is not a guarantee. If the card is lost or stolen, report it to the police and follow the replacement instructions.

Before travelling

Migrationsverket requires a valid passport and residence permit card for return travel. An expired card and a printed decision are not a guaranteed substitute. If you are abroad without valid documents, contact the authority about your circumstances before booking travel.
