Age and the knowledge requirements

The knowledge requirements generally apply to ages 16–66. They are separate from identity, residence, conduct and income conditions. Children apply separately through their guardians; they are not included in a parent’s application.

Migrationsverket also lists exceptions for stateless people born in Sweden who are under 21, and Nordic citizens using notification. Check the exact route and how the age condition applies to your case.

Grades show knowledge; they are not a blanket exemption

SFI D is accepted evidence of Swedish. It does not show civics knowledge. The current official list also names Tisus; describing its acceptance as an unconfirmed media report is outdated. Check each subject against Migrationsverket’s list and keep the transcript.

Individual exceptions and support

Migrationsverket says an exemption can be possible when a disability or other reasons prevent a person from meeting the requirements. The authority assesses the case. Ask what evidence is needed; do not use a generic online checklist to decide that you are exempt.

Test adaptations are another option and are handled by UHR. An adaptation changes support for taking a test; it is not the same as exemption from a knowledge requirement.

Before booking or paying

As checked on 3 October 2026, UHR says the Swedish test will be introduced later. Migrationsverket warns that it may arrive later than planned. There is no bookable sitting established by these sources.
