How the language works

En or ett?

Every Swedish noun is either an en-word (common gender) or an ett-word (neuter). Many are en-words: en stad, en vän, en bil. Ett-words: ett namn, ett land, ett jobb. There are few rules, so learn the article together with the word. People are almost always en-words (en man, en kvinna, en lärare) – exception: ett barn (a child).

Examples

  • Jag har en vän i Uppsala.I have a friend in Uppsala.
  • Sverige är ett land i Norden.Sweden is a country in the Nordic region.
  • Det är en stor stad.It is a big city.
  • Har du ett jobb?Do you have a job?
