How the language works
Sounds and word order: the verb in second place
Swedish has 29 letters: a–z plus å, ä and ö. Vowels can be long or short, and pronunciation varies by word and dialect. Listen to words with å, ä and ö, and the difference between the sj sound in sju and the tj sound in tjugo. In an ordinary declarative main clause, the finite verb is the second sentence element (V2), not necessarily the second word: Jag bor i Malmö. Nu bor jag i Malmö. I dag bor jag i Malmö.
Examples
- Jag heter Omar.My name is Omar.
- Nu bor jag i Göteborg. Now I live in Gothenburg.
- Sju sjuksköterskor skjuter.Seven nurses shoot. (tongue-twister)
- Tjugo kjolar är köpta.Twenty skirts are bought.
