Travelling while you wait for citizenship: the six-week line

A pending citizenship application does not restrict travel; your residence permit does. The six-week rule that eats into your hemvisttid, the card you need to get back in, and the letter that may arrive while you are away.

Your citizenship case has been in the queue for a year, and someone at home is ill. The question is whether leaving Sweden for a while will cost you the application. It will not — but the card in your wallet and the calendar might.

The application is not what stops you

A pending citizenship case does not confiscate your passport, freeze your permit, or require anyone’s permission to leave. Nothing in it touches the border.

What touches the border is the permit you already hold and the plastic card that proves it. Those are separate questions from the citizenship case, and they answer to separate rules.

What getting back in requires

Migrationsverket states the requirement in one sentence: a person with a permanent residence permit can leave Sweden and return, but to return you must have a valid passport and your residence permit card.

The card is not the permit. A permanent residence permit does not expire, while cards issued today are valid at most three years. You book the renewal, meaning a photograph and fingerprints, on Min sida at the earliest three months before the card’s end date. There is no fee and no new application.

The renewal happens in Sweden. Since 13 April 2026 Migrationsverket sends an automatic reminder to book in good time before the current card stops being valid.

Length of absence is a separate rule again. If you are away for more than a year, Migrationsverket can revoke a permanent residence permit. If you know in advance that you will be away for up to a year, you file an Anmälan om att få behålla permanent uppehållstillstånd (186011), and it must reach Migrationsverket at the latest one week before you leave Sweden.

Researchers and former doctoral students whose permanent permit followed such a permit have two years rather than one, on the same condition that the notification is filed. If you will live outside Sweden for a year or more, you report that to Skatteverket as well.

Six weeks is the line that matters

Hemvist is not a formality. Migrationsverket defines it as being resident in Sweden and intending to remain here, which is why a long absence is read as evidence about where you actually live, and not merely as days missing from a total.

The counting rule is published and specific. Short trips abroad, visits and holidays have no bearing on the hemvisttid. But if you have been outside Sweden for more than six weeks in one year, the whole time you were outside Sweden is deducted from the hemvisttid.

Read that twice. It is not the days above six weeks that are deducted. Cross the line and the entire absence goes.

Nadia’s two years, counted in days
  1. 15 Jun 2026
    Application submitted
2 900 kr paid; nothing about her right to travel changes
  2. 20 Jul – 9 Aug 2026
    21 days in Amman
Passport and PUT card both valid the whole time
  3. 5 – 18 Dec 2026
    14 more days abroad
35 days in 2026 — under the six-week line, nothing deducted
  4. 19 Dec 2026
    Card renewal can be booked
Three months before the card expires on 19 Mar 2027
  5. 1 Mar – 10 May 2027
    71 days planned
Over six weeks: all 71 days come off the hemvisttid
The six-week line comes from Migrationsverket’s own wording: more than six weeks abroad in one year and the whole absence is deducted.

Nadia applied on 15 June 2026. She was abroad 21 days in the summer and 14 days in December, so 35 days, under the line, and nothing is deducted. Her plan for spring 2027 is 71 days, and those 71 days come off in full, pushing an eight-year date from mid-August to late October 2027.

If you move to another country and settle there, the hemvisttid in Sweden ends, and a new one starts on the day you move back. And if your permit rests on protection status, a trip to the country you were protected from is a different order of risk: Migrationsverket may conclude that the need for protection has ceased, which can affect both the permit and the citizenship case.

The letter that arrives while you are away

Migrationsverket writes to the address in the population register. It does not phone, and the decision itself is posted there.

One letter matters more than the rest. Before you can be granted citizenship you must attend Migrationsverket in person for an identity check, called personlig inställelse, and you may only book after the letter telling you to book has arrived. Appointments are in Malmö, Göteborg, Norrköping, Sundbyberg, Sundsvall and Boden. If you do not attend, you risk not becoming a Swedish citizen.

So a six-week trip is not only a hemvisttid question. It is also a question of who opens your post. Keep the registered address correct at Skatteverket, and arrange for someone to open and photograph what arrives.

If you handed your home-country passport to Migrationsverket and now need it, you can ask for it back. The agency asks you to wait if you do not need it, because the request can affect the processing time of your case, and it will write to you when it needs the passport again.

If the card expires while you are abroad

This is the situation with the least good answer, which is exactly why it deserves planning rather than improvisation.

The card is produced from a photograph and fingerprints taken in Sweden, and Migrationsverket publishes no route for renewing a permanent residence permit card from another country. The permit survives. The proof of it does not travel.

So the practical rule is to renew before you go whenever the card’s end date falls inside the trip, or shortly after your return. Booking opens three months ahead. If the card is lost or stolen abroad, the police report comes first, and you must bring a copy of it to the appointment for the new card.

If your card has already expired and you are outside Sweden, contact Migrationsverket and the nearest Swedish embassy before you book a flight home. Both may need to be involved, and neither can be arranged at an airport.

Before you book the ticket
  1. Passport valid for the whole trip
And for as long after it as the destination demands
  2. PUT card valid on the day you fly home
Renew it in Sweden first if it expires while you are away
  3. Days abroad this year added up
Over six weeks and the whole absence is deducted
  4. Registered address correct at Skatteverket
The decision is posted there, not emailed
  5. Someone who can open your post
The letter about the identity check carries a booking step
  6. Notification filed if you will be away up to a year
Must reach Migrationsverket one week before you leave

What we do not know yet

Migrationsverket says “more than six weeks in one year” without publishing whether that means a calendar year or any rolling twelve months, and the difference decides real cases. Until it says, count on the stricter reading.

Nor is there a published figure for how much repeated shorter absences weigh in the assessment of whether you still primarily reside in Sweden. Migrationsverket says only that longer and repeated stays can matter, and that each case is assessed individually.

And there is no published procedure for renewing a permanent residence permit card from abroad. If you are already outside Sweden with an expired card, ask Migrationsverket directly rather than relying on an account of what worked for someone else.

Questions, answered

Can I travel abroad while waiting for Swedish citizenship?

Yes. Migrationsverket states that an application for citizenship generally does not affect the right to travel, which is governed by your residence permit. Make sure the permit and the card are valid for the whole trip, including the day you fly back.

Does a long holiday reduce my hemvisttid?

Short trips, visits and holidays do not. But if you are outside Sweden for more than six weeks in one year, the whole time you were outside Sweden is deducted from the hemvisttid, not only the part above six weeks.

What happens if my PUT card expires while I am abroad?

You need a valid card to re-enter, and the card is made from a photograph and fingerprints taken in Sweden. Migrationsverket publishes no route for renewing it from abroad, so renew before you go. If it has already expired, contact Migrationsverket and the nearest Swedish embassy before booking a flight home.

What if a letter from Migrationsverket arrives while I am away?

Letters and the decision go to your registered address. The letter about the identity check (personlig inställelse) tells you to book an appointment, and you can only book after it arrives. Keep the address correct at Skatteverket and have someone open your post.

Can I get my passport back while my citizenship case is being processed?

Yes, you can ask for it back. Migrationsverket asks you to wait if you do not need it, because the request can affect the processing time of your case, and it will write to you when it needs the passport again.

How long can I be outside Sweden with a permanent residence permit?

If you are away for more than a year, Migrationsverket can revoke the permit. For an absence of up to a year you file form 186011, which must reach Migrationsverket at the latest one week before you leave. Researchers and former doctoral students can have two years on the same condition.
