How the language works

Plural: five groups

Swedish nouns have five plural endings: 1) -or: en kvinna → kvinnor, en krona → kronor. 2) -ar: en bil → bilar, en kasse → kassar. 3) -er: en tomat → tomater, en affär → affärer. 4) -n: ett äpple → äpplen, ett kvitto → kvitton. 5) no ending: ett hus → hus, ett barn → barn. Rule of thumb: ett-words ending in a consonant take no ending; en-words ending in -a take -or.

Examples

  • Två tomater kostar tio kronor. Two tomatoes cost ten kronor.
  • Jag köper tre äpplen.I am buying three apples.
  • Barnen vill ha kassar. The children want bags.
  • Det finns många affärer i centrum. There are many shops in the centre.
