Chapter 3 · How Sweden is governed
En handläggare ska pröva en nära väns ansökan på en statlig myndighet. Hur ska handläggaren hantera risken för jäv?
An official at a government agency must assess a close friend’s application. How should the official address the conflict-of-interest risk?
Correct answer: Disclose the relationship and let another official take over
A close friendship can call the official’s impartiality into question and create a conflict of interest. The official must disclose the relationship to the agency and must not take part in handling the case if disqualified. Another official can then assess the application under the same rules as for everyone else.

Why this option does not fit
Fortsätta handlägga om vännen accepterar det
The applicant’s consent does not remove the agency’s duty to handle cases impartially.
Fortsätta handlägga men låta chefen godkänna beslutet
Conflict-of-interest rules also apply to those preparing a case. Having the manager make the final decision is therefore not enough.
Fortsätta handlägga men använda samma krav som för andra
The same legal requirements must apply to everyone, but that does not remove the official’s conflict of interest.
