From student permit to work in 2026: the 12-month job-seeker permit
What you can do while studying, the permit that gives you a year to find work after graduation, the longer version for doctoral graduates since 11 June 2026, and how to switch to a work permit without leaving Sweden.

The programme finishes in June, the student permit runs to the end of July, and Swedish hiring goes quiet until the middle of August. That gap is the reason the job-seeker permit exists, and the reason the date on your student permit matters more than the date on your degree certificate.
What you may do while you study
A residence permit for studies at a university lets you work without an hour cap, for any employer, alongside your studies. There is no separate work permit and no weekly limit.
What Migrationsverket checks at each extension is study results: enough credits earned during the previous permit period. Working full time and failing courses is the quickest way to lose the permit, so treat the credits as the real condition rather than the hours.
The maintenance requirement for study permits and the length of first permits were changed in the rules announced on 25 May 2026. Those details sit outside this article; check Migrationsverket’s current study pages before you rely on an older figure.
| Study permit | Job-seeker permit | Work permit | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Length | Per study period | 12 months (12–18 after doctoral studies) | At most 2 years |
| May you work? | Yes, no hour cap | Yes, any employer | Yes, for the employer in the decision |
| Main condition | Study results | Completed programme and own funds | Salary at 34 470 kr and the four insurances |
| Counts towards citizenship | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Counts towards PUT for labour migrants | No | No | Yes |
The bridge: 12 months to look for work
When the programme is finished you can apply for a residence permit to seek employment or examine the possibilities of starting a business. Migrationsverket’s conditions, as listed at the end of August 2026: a completed higher-education programme of at least two semesters, meaning the whole programme you were admitted to with every course passed; a student permit still valid when you apply; a passport covering the whole period; enough money to support yourself for the months you apply for; and, if your total time in Sweden is under a year, comprehensive health insurance.
The permit runs for 12 months. After a completed doctoral programme or research period, the rule since 11 June 2026 gives at least 12 and at most 18 months, which matters if you defend in the autumn when hiring is slow.
Apply before your student permit expires. That single sentence carries the article. The application is online, the fee is paid online, and if it arrives in time you may stay in Sweden while it is processed. Miss the date and you leave and apply from abroad, which takes months.
On the money: Migrationsverket has listed a figure per month for the period you apply for, and the amount has been 9 700 kr a month, roughly 116 400 kr for a full year. Check the current figure on Migrationsverket’s page before you move anything, because these amounts are set by regulation and change. The money must be yours and visible in your own account; a parent’s balance does not count unless it has been transferred to you. Caseworkers expect a bank statement from the days just before the application.
Where you stand on the day you would apply
- Whole programme completed, student permit still validApply now, before the permit expires
- Doctoral programme or research period completedApply — 12 to 18 months since 11 June 2026
- One course still unfinishedExtend the student permit first, then apply
- Money is in a parent’s accountTransfer it to your own account first
- Student permit already expiredNo application from inside Sweden; you would apply from abroad
From offer to work permit
With a signed offer you apply for a work permit from inside Sweden. The rule that normally requires a first work permit to be applied for from abroad does not apply to people who completed higher-education studies here or who hold the job-seeker permit.
The application is otherwise the ordinary one: the post advertised for ten days in Sweden and the EU, the four insurances from your first day, and a salary reaching the current floor of 90 per cent of the median, 34 470 kr a month for applications received from 16 June 2026. Starting salaries in several graduate fields sit a few hundred kronor under that line. Negotiate before you accept, because Migrationsverket judges the signed contract and not the intention behind it.
You may start working as soon as the work permit application is filed, provided you filed while the job-seeker permit or the student permit was still valid. Keep the job-seeker decision; it is the document that shows you were legally here the whole time.
A worked example. Ravi’s programme ends on 5 June 2027 and his student permit runs to 31 July 2027. The degree certificate is issued on 20 June; he files the job-seeker application on 25 June, inside the permit, with a bank statement dated 23 June. He signs an offer on 1 November at 35 000 kr a month and files the work permit application on 3 November, while the job-seeker permit is valid. He starts on 1 December without waiting for the decision.

Starting a business instead
The same permit covers examining whether to start a business. Actually running one needs a residence permit for self-employed persons, with its own tests: a viable plan, capital to run the business and support yourself, and relevant experience.
It is a harder route than employment and the processing times are long. Talk to your university’s innovation office or to Almi before you build a year around it.
What these years count towards
Time on a student permit and on the job-seeker permit counts towards the residence time for citizenship, though study years may be weighted differently in that calculation.
It does not count towards the four years of work permits that permanent residence for labour migrants requires. That clock starts with your first work permit, not with your first day at university. People are regularly surprised by this in year five, so count from the right date now.
What we do not know yet
The maintenance amounts and the exact conditions for study permits were being reworked in the rules announced on 25 May 2026, and the published guidance has not settled everywhere. Any figure in this article that comes from Migrationsverket’s pages should be checked against those pages on the day you apply.
It is also not yet visible in statistics how many doctoral graduates use the longer 18-month version, or how Migrationsverket weighs the difference between 12 and 18 months in individual cases.

Questions, answered
I have one course left. Can I apply for the job-seeker permit?
No. The programme must be completed with every course passed. Extend the student permit instead, finish the course, then apply.
How long is the permit to look for work after studies?
Twelve months. After a completed doctoral programme or research period it is at least 12 and at most 18 months, a rule in force since 11 June 2026.
How much money do I need to show?
Migrationsverket lists an amount per month for the period you apply for; the listed figure has been 9 700 kr a month, roughly 116 400 kr for a year. Check the current amount, and keep the money in your own account.
Can I work during the job-seeker permit?
Yes, for any employer. You may also start a new job as soon as the work permit application is filed, provided you filed while the permit was still valid.
Does time as a student count towards permanent residence?
Not towards the four years of work permits that labour migrants need. It does count towards the residence time for citizenship.
My student permit has already expired. What now?
You cannot apply for the job-seeker permit from inside Sweden after it expires. With an offer, you would apply for a work permit from abroad.
