Applying to a Swedish university as an international student
One national system, two admission rounds, one 900 kronor fee. The deadlines that decide whether you can get a residence permit in time, how ranking really works, and why an offer is only preliminary until the first tuition instalment is paid.

You have found the programme, the university wants a document you have never heard of, and somewhere there is a deadline that decides whether you can be in Sweden in time for the first lecture. Swedish admissions are centralised and predictable once you see the shape of them. Here is the shape.
One system, two websites, two rounds
There is a single national application for almost every course and programme in Sweden. Universityadmissions.se is the English version, antagning.se is the Swedish version, and they are the same system with the same account and the same deadlines.
Each semester has two rounds. The first round is the international one: earlier deadlines, earlier results, and enough time afterwards to pay tuition, apply for a residence permit and find somewhere to live.
The second round is the ordinary round for people already in Sweden. Everything taught in Swedish is available in it, many English-taught programmes are not, and University Admissions states plainly that a non-EU applicant who needs a residence permit will most likely not have time.
That single sentence is the most useful advice on the site. If you are outside Sweden and need a permit, plan around the first round and treat the second as a fallback for courses that are still open.
| First round | Second round | |
|---|---|---|
| Built for | International applicants | People already in Sweden |
| Autumn semester | Opens mid-October, closes 15 January | Opens 16 March, closes 15 April |
| Spring semester | Opened 1 June, closed 17 August 2026 | Opens 15 September, closes 15 October 2026 |
| Programmes on offer | The English-taught range | Everything in Swedish; many English programmes gone |
| Residence permit | Time to apply and be decided | Most likely not enough time |
The calendar that decides everything
The autumn 2026 cycle shows the pattern precisely. The first round opened on 16 October 2025 and closed on 15 January 2026. The application fee, the proof of fee-exempt status and all supporting documents were due on 2 February. Results came on 26 March for master's and 31 March for bachelor's, and the semester started in late August.
The second round for the same autumn opened on 16 March 2026, closed on 15 April, with fees due 22 April, documents 18 June, results 10 July and the reply deadline 20 July.
Spring works the same way half a year offset. For January 2027 the first round ran from 1 June to 17 August 2026, and the second round runs from 15 September to 15 October 2026, with results on 9 December and a reply deadline in mid-December.
The document deadline is the one people miss. Submitting the application in time does not help if the transcript arrives a week after the supporting-document date; the application is then treated as late and is only considered if places are left.

Money: 900 kronor now, tuition later
If you are a citizen of a country outside the EU, EEA or Switzerland you normally pay an application fee of 900 kr. It is one fee per semester, no matter how many courses or programmes you apply for or how many rounds you use, and it is never refunded.
You do not pay it if you hold Swedish citizenship, a permanent Swedish residence permit, a temporary permit granted for reasons other than studies, EU/EEA or Swiss citizenship, long-term resident status in Sweden, or a place in a doctoral programme, among other exemptions. A residence permit for studies does not exempt you.
Tuition is a separate matter and each university sets its own. It is paid to the university, never to University Admissions, and nobody at UHR sends invoices; treat any invoice claiming to come from them as a fraud attempt.
The link between money and your permit is strict. An offer is preliminary until you pay the first tuition instalment, and Migrationsverket will not approve a residence permit for studies until your university has notified them that you paid.
Ranking, and the mistake that costs a place
You rank your choices, and the selection works down your list. You are considered for your first choice, and if you are eligible and a place is free you are offered it, at which point every lower-ranked choice on your list is deleted.
At master's level you may select up to four programmes. At bachelor's level up to eight courses and programmes, and you can be admitted to at most 45 credits in a semester.
So a safe choice ranked above the programme you actually want will take the place of that programme. Rank by desire, not by probability, and set the order before the application deadline, because after it you cannot reorder what you have already applied to without the change counting as a late application.

- Fee paid or exemption documentedBy the fee deadline, not the application deadline

- Passport valid for the whole permit periodA permit is never longer than the passport
From offer to residence permit
Apply for the residence permit as soon as you have your notification of selection results, not when the semester approaches.
Migrationsverket requires final admission to full-time studies, which for a university means 30 credits per semester, a valid passport, and proof that you can support yourself. For applications made in 2026 that is at least 10 656 kr a month, with 4 440 kr more for a spouse or cohabiting partner and 2 664 kr per child. The fee is 1 500 kr for an adult and 750 kr for a child.
If your programme is shorter than a year you need comprehensive health insurance. If it lasts at least a year you register instead in the population register at Skatteverket and use public healthcare.
One worked example. You are reading this on 31 August 2026 and want to start in January 2027. The first round closed two weeks ago. The second round opens on 15 September and closes on 15 October, but with results on 9 December and a semester starting in January, a permit application filed in December is unlikely to be decided in time. The honest plan is the autumn 2027 first round, which on the pattern of previous years opens in mid-October 2026 and closes on 15 January 2027.
What we do not know yet
The exact dates for the autumn 2027 round were not published when this article was checked on 31 August 2026. Every year since the current system settled they have followed the same pattern, mid-October to 15 January, but the pattern is not a promise.
Tuition levels for 2027 are also set university by university and change from year to year. Read the course page at the university and the key-dates page at universityadmissions.se on the day you apply, and put both deadlines, application and documents, in your calendar as separate entries.

Questions, answered
When do I apply to Swedish universities as an international student?
In the first round. For an autumn start it has opened in mid-October and closed on 15 January, with results in late March. For a January start the first round ran from 1 June to 17 August 2026. Check the key-dates page before you rely on the pattern.
How much does it cost to apply?
900 kr per semester if you are not exempt, whatever number of courses or programmes you apply for. Tuition is separate, set by each university and paid to the university, and it is not refunded if you change your mind.
Do I have to pay tuition fees in Sweden?
Not if you have Swedish citizenship, a permanent Swedish residence permit, a temporary permit granted for reasons other than studies, EU/EEA or Swiss citizenship, long-term resident status in Sweden, or a doctoral place, among other exemptions. A residence permit for studies does not exempt you.
How many programmes can I apply for?
Up to four at master's level and up to eight courses and programmes at bachelor's level, ranked. You can be admitted to at most 45 credits in a semester, and lower-ranked choices are deleted as soon as you are offered a place.
Can I apply in the second round if I need a residence permit?
You can, but University Admissions states that a non-EU applicant who needs a permit will most likely not have time. Results come in July for the autumn and in December for the spring, which leaves very little room before the semester starts.
What do I need for the study residence permit?
Final admission to full-time studies, a valid passport, and proof of funds of at least 10 656 kr a month for applications made in 2026, plus 4 440 kr for a partner and 2 664 kr per child. The fee is 1 500 kr for an adult, and the first tuition instalment must be paid first.
