Children born in Sweden: residence permits when the parent holds PUT
Birth in Sweden does not itself grant Swedish citizenship or permanent residence. A child with a Swedish parent at birth normally acquires Swedish citizenship through the parent. Swedish citizenship for a child 2026: three years
The Swedish citizenship requirements for a child are the child’s own, not the parent’s. Under the rules in force since 6 June 2026 a child needs an application of their own: three years in Sweden under 15, five from 15, every custodian’s approval and 475 kr.
