Bringing your parents to Sweden in 2026: what is actually possible
Migrationsverket's own words are that it is very difficult. Here is the exact test for an adult relative, the maintenance figures for 2026, the one-year visitor's permit that pensioner parents actually get, and what changed on 12 and 13 July 2026.

Your mother is 71, she lives alone in a city you left four years ago, and every phone call ends with the same question. You have a permanent residence permit and a salary. The honest answer is that Swedish law almost never lets a parent move here permanently, and that there is a second route worth knowing about.
Parents are not close family
Swedish migration law splits families in two. Close family means spouses, registered partners, cohabiting partners and their children. Everyone else, including a parent of an adult, is an other relative, and the rules for that group are strict on purpose.
Migrationsverket puts it in one sentence on its own page: it is very difficult to get a residence permit to move to Sweden to live with a relative who is not a close family member. Treat that sentence as the starting point rather than as discouragement to argue away.
There is a separate track for a parent of a child under 18 who lives in Sweden, including the parent of an unaccompanied minor. If that is your situation, read Migrationsverket's pages for parents of children under 18 instead; the rest of this article is about the adult case.
The five things that are tested
For an adult relative, all of these must hold at once.
The person in Sweden must have a permanent residence permit, or a temporary permit granted for protection or exceptionally distressing circumstances with a well-founded prospect of a longer permit.
You must have lived in the same household in your country of origin immediately before that person moved to Sweden. Not nearby, not in the same city: in the same household, immediately before.
You must be socially and emotionally dependent on each other to a degree that makes living apart very difficult, and that dependence must already have existed in the country of origin and go beyond what a family normally has. Financial support alone is explicitly not enough.
You must intend to live together in Sweden, and you must apply as soon as possible after the person in Sweden moved here and was granted a permanent residence permit. Apply too late, or build the dependence after the move, and the application fails on that ground alone.
And the person in Sweden must meet the maintenance requirement.
Start with the person already in Sweden
- Permanent residence permitThe application is possible, if the other tests hold
- Protection permit with well-founded prospectsPossible, examined case by case
- Work, study or family permit onlyNot an anchor for an other relative
- You lived apart before the moveThe household test fails
- Dependence formed after the moveRefused on that ground
The maintenance requirement, in kronor
The person in Sweden must be able to support the whole household and have a home that is big enough, secured for at least a year ahead.
In 2026 the income after tax must cover the rent and still leave: 6 243 kr for a single adult, 10 314 kr for a married or cohabiting couple, 3 336 kr for a child aged 0–6, 4 004 kr for 7–10, 4 672 kr for 11–14 and 5 339 kr for 15 or older. The child amounts are reduced by child allowance and the large-family supplement.
Farida is single and pays 9 200 kr a month in rent. Before her mother is counted at all, she must show at least 15 443 kr a month after tax. A room in someone else's flat does not count as housing, and a sublet must be approved by the landlord, the tenant-owner association or the rent tribunal.
The fee is 2 000 kr for an adult and 1 000 kr for a child under 18. A permit for an other relative is granted for at most two years and never longer than the passport, it can be extended, and it gives the right to work and to study. Of the cases decided in the last twelve months, 75 per cent were decided within 18 months.
The route that usually works: a one-year visit
There is a second door, and it is the one most families walk through. A visitor's residence permit is for stays of 90 days or more, and Migrationsverket writes that parents who are no longer able to work, for example pensioners, and who visit their child in Sweden can be granted a permit for a total of one year.
The requirements are practical rather than emotional. A passport valid for at least three months after the visit ends. A stay that really is a visit, with the intention of leaving afterwards. Funds of at least 700 kr for each day in Sweden, shown by your own bank statement or by the person in Sweden who will support you. And individual medical travel insurance valid in Sweden, which Migrationsverket recommends should cover at least EUR 30 000.
The person in Sweden fills in the invitation form (249011), and a guarantor who covers the costs fills in form 255011.
A six-month visit therefore needs 180 × 700 kr, that is 126 000 kr, shown as available funds. The fee is 1 500 kr for an adult and 750 kr for a child. For a stay under 90 days, do not apply for a residence permit at all: check whether your parent needs a Schengen visa instead.
| Permit as a relative | Visitor's residence permit | |
|---|---|---|
| Length | Up to two years, extendable | Up to one year in total for a parent who no longer works |
| Money test | Maintenance requirement on the person in Sweden | At least 700 kr per day of the visit |
| Insurance | Public healthcare once registered here | Individual medical travel insurance, at least EUR 30 000 recommended |
| Fee | 2 000 kr adult, 1 000 kr child | 1 500 kr adult, 750 kr child |
| Right to work | Yes, the permit gives the right to work and study | A visit is a visit; you must intend to leave afterwards |
One warning that costs people their case: if a family member already has an application for a residence permit under way, Migrationsverket advises against also applying for a visitor's permit, because the ongoing application may be rejected.
- Passport valid three months past the visitCopies of the pages Migrationsverket asks for
- Proof of at least 700 kr per dayBank statement, payslip or the guarantor's documents
- Medical travel insuranceValid in Sweden, at least EUR 30 000 recommended
- Invitation from the person in SwedenForm 249011
- Form 255011 if someone else paysMeans of support in connection with visiting Sweden
- Copy of the ID card of the person in SwedenAttached to the application
If you or your parent is an EU citizen
The rules are different and much softer. An EU/EEA citizen with right of residence in Sweden does not need a residence permit, and family members of EU/EEA citizens pay no application fee.
An EU/EEA citizen without right of residence who has a family member here can apply for a residence permit from inside Sweden, use a national ID card instead of a passport, and start working or studying before the decision arrives. Swiss citizens and their family members apply on their own track.
What we do not know yet
How the July 2026 changes will move these decisions in practice is still open. The requirement that the person in Sweden holds a permanent permit now excludes a group that used to qualify through asylum, and the stricter conduct requirement from 13 July 2026 is too new for anyone to say how often it decides a case.
Processing times move as well. The 18-month figure is a rolling statistic for cases decided in the last twelve months, not a promise. Read Migrationsverket's page for your permit type on the day you file, and keep every document that proves you once lived in the same household.

Questions, answered
Can I bring my mother to Sweden if I have a permanent residence permit?
Only in narrow circumstances. A parent of an adult counts as an other relative, and Migrationsverket writes that such permits are very difficult to get. You must have lived in the same household immediately before you moved to Sweden, be socially and emotionally dependent on each other from before the move, and apply as soon as possible after you were granted your permit.
How much money do I need to have to bring a relative?
The maintenance requirement is about what is left after rent. In 2026 that is 6 243 kr a month for a single adult and 10 314 kr for a couple, plus the amounts for children by age, and you must have housing that is big enough for at least a year ahead.
Can my parents come on a long visit instead?
Yes, and this is the usual route. A visitor's residence permit covers stays of 90 days or more, and Migrationsverket states that parents who no longer work, for example pensioners, can be granted one for a total of one year. You need at least 700 kr for each day and medical travel insurance.
How long does an application for a relative take?
Of the cases decided in the last twelve months, 75 per cent were decided within 18 months. The figure is a rolling statistic, so read the current number on Migrationsverket's page for the permit you are applying for.
Does sending money home count as dependence?
No. Migrationsverket states that you cannot be granted a residence permit if you are solely dependent on the person in Sweden for financial support. The dependence has to be social and emotional, and it must have existed in the country of origin.
What does it cost to apply?
2 000 kr for an adult and 1 000 kr for a child under 18 for a permit as a relative, and 1 500 kr for an adult and 750 kr for a child for a visitor's residence permit. Family members of EU/EEA citizens pay no fee. Fees are not refunded if the answer is no.
